The CU Police Department is investigating a reported sexual assault in a residence hall.
On Wednesday around 1 a.m., the police responded to a call that Joshua Newton, a 19-year-old CU student, allegedly moved a woman from one room into another, locked the door and did not let her leave, said Molly Bosley, CUPD public information officer.
Newton faces up to five charges, Bosley said.
“All the charges were documented and they included first degree kidnapping, assault in the third degree, sexual assault, obstruction of telephone services and domestic violence,” Bosley said.
Bosley also said that the victim and Newton had been in a relationship for a couple of months.
“This was an incident between known (parties); we are not calculating that there is any threat to the CU communities,” Bosley said.
The woman was physically unharmed, but the CU Police Department has not released the name of the residence hall, Bosley said.
“We can not release details that might identify the victim,” Bosley said. “A lot of the details are still under investigation.”
Newton is currently in the Boulder County Jail, Bosley said.
District Attorney spokesperson Catherine Olguin said Newton had his advisory jail courtroom appearance earlier today and will have the formal filing of the charges at 2 p.m. on Feb. 23.
