As summer slowly fades into fall, the vibrantly changing leaves can be seen throughout Boulder. These reds, oranges and yellows stretch on for miles. This is a short guide to a scenic drive to see one of nature’s many wonders – the changing leaves of fall.
Peak-to-Peak Highway
The Peak-to-Peak Highway, in the shadow of Longs Peak, leads you through Boulder Canyon to Nederland. This two-hour trip is full of brilliantly colored aspens and unmatchable views of the Continental Divide. Meandering through valleys and skimming the top of ridges, the Peak-to-Peak Highway takes the route most scenic at every turn. Take Colorado 119 (Diagonal Highway) north to Nederland, and then follow Colorado 72 to Raymond. From there, proceed on Colorado 7 past Longs Peak to Estes Park.
Estes Park
The beauty of the foliage does not subside once you arrive in Estes Park. The small mountain town is crawling with practically glowing leaves. You could even venture into Rocky Mountain National Park and take a drive up Trail Ridge Road. There you can experience fall color combined with sweeping vistas. There are also many walking trails throughout this side of Rocky Mountain National Park.
Eldorado Canyon State Park
Eldorado Canyon State Park has it all, from rock climbing to streamside picnic areas and trails with panoramic vistas. This magnificent canyon setting makes viewing the changing fall leaves that much more enjoyable. Take Colorado 93 south from Boulder, turn right on Colorado 170 and continue to the park entrance west of Eldorado Springs, about eight miles southwest of Boulder.
Eldora Mountain Resort
Eldora Ski Mountain, minus the snow, is beautiful this time of year. The leaves are changing, yet the weather is still pleasant. If you take the Peak-to-Peak Highway, you can stop at Eldora Mountain Resort just three miles outside Nederland. Take Colorado 119 to County Road 130 to Eldora Avenue.
No matter where you choose to go, the fall foliage will mesmerize you. Boulder is located in the midst of both the snowy mountains and the changing fall leaves.
