CU campus to be open on 4/20

CU’s main campus will not be closed this coming 4/20, chancellor Phil DiStefano announced Friday.

The campus has been closed to non-affiliates for the marijuana-smoking holiday each of the past three years, with police officers and security personnel stationed round campus checking identifications.

“I told you last year that I hoped campus closures would not be necessary in the near-future and that we could go about our daily business on April 20 as we would any other day. That time has come,” DiStefano wrote in his announcement.

Though the campus will be open, Norlin Quad, the traditional 4/20 gathering spot, will be closed that afternoon, as well as other places if closures become necessary, DiStefano said in the announcement.

DiStefano said other events in the Denver area have eliminated the need to gather at CU, opening the door to opening campus again.

“After three years of closing the campus to non-affiliates, the public understands that we are serious about eliminating this gathering that disrupted the academic mission of the university,” DiStefano said.
