29 years ago: March 23, 1978
Construction continued on what was to become the Coors Events Center. The Conference/Event Center, as it was called then, was scheduled for completion on May 1, 1979. The center was to be used for the basketball. Gymnastics and wrestling events that drew large crowds were also held there. Rock concerts were also another possibility if the band brought their own sound system. The estimated cost of the building was $7.5 million. Construction began in September 1973 but halted in February 1975 for two years because of a lack of funds.
23 years ago: March 15, 1984
The University of Colorado Student Union was at it again, this time considering a $44,000 proposal for a new FM radio station for CU. CU already had an AM radio station, KAIR, that could only be heard on campus. The proposed FM station would be heard all over Boulder. UCSU co-executive Joe Beck argued an FM station would “in essence, put us on the same level as other universities of this size.”
